Conditions We Treat

Binge Eating Disorder

What is it?

Binge Eating Disorder (BED) is characterized by recurrent episodes of eating large quantities of food, often quickly and to the point of discomfort. These episodes are accompanied by feelings of loss of control and shame or guilt afterward, but unlike bulimia, they are not followed by purging behaviors.

Symptoms of Binge Eating

Physical Symptoms

  • Digestive problems and discomfort after overeating.

  • Fluctuations in weight.

Psychological Symptoms

  • Eating in secret and feeling embarrassed about eating.

  • Persistent feelings of distress or guilt about binge eating.

  • Emotional eating as a response to stress, anxiety, or boredom.

Risk Factors for Binge Eating Disorder

What is a risk factor

A risk factor is a characteristic, condition, or behavior that increases the likelihood of developing a disease or health disorder, such as anorexia nervosa. Risk factors can be biological, psychological, or environmental. They do not guarantee that a person will develop the condition, but they can contribute to the possibility of its occurrence.

Risk factors for binge eating disorder

  • Genetic and biological factors, including family history of eating disorders.

  • Emotional distress and psychological issues such as depression and anxiety.

  • Societal and cultural influences that emphasize body image.

Early diagnosis and intervention significantly improve the likelihood of recovery. Seeking help at the earliest sign of symptoms can prevent long-term health problems.
